What are Home Groups?

A Home Group at Campbelltown City Baptist Church could be defined as an intentional face-to face gathering of three to twelve people on a regular time schedule. Each Small Group has a common purpose of discovering and growing in the possibilities of the abundant life that comes from being part of the Jesus community. The first home group we read about in the New Testament was Jesus and his twelve disciples. The early church also used home groups meeting in homes as the centre of Church life. Nearly every major spiritual awakening in the last 2,000 years has also been accompanied, spontaneously or by design, by the huddling of home groups to study the Bible, pray, minister to one another and to keep each other accountable.

Why do we have Home Groups at Campbelltown?

As part of the vision and mission of Campbelltown City Baptist, Home Groups are a cornerstone of who we are and what we do. They exist at Campbelltown for the following reasons:

  • To help win people to Jesus and to grow people in Jesus

  • To care for one another deeply and support each other on the journey

  • To provide the opportunity to study scripture together helping to discern God's will while seeking to respond and apply what is learnt to everyday living

  • To offer opportunities to develop authentic friendships

  • They give opportunity to practice the values of the Jesus community

  • To facilitate service opportunities within the Jesus community

What happens in Home Groups?

There are five key elements to Home Group life at Campbelltown. They are:

  • Worship - an intentional focus on God

  • Care - an intentional focus on one another

  • Study - an intentional focus on the Bible

  • Service - an intentional focus on serving people outside of the group

  • Outreach-an intentional focus on reaching people outside of the group

Where do Home Groups meet?

Most Home groups meet in a home in the greater Campbelltown area, although they may meet at other locations that suit group members.

What can I expect from a Home Group?

The benefits of being a member of a Home Group are many. A Home group member can reasonably expect to experience:

  • A sense of mutual love and commitment

  • A program designed to help you grow spiritually

  • A feeling of being part of an extended family

  • That what is shared in the group stays in the group

  • The development of new friendships and pastoral care

What is expected from Home Group members?
  • An understanding of what Home groups are about

  • A willingness to acknowledge a leader

  • A servant spirit

  • Sensitivity to others

  • A teachable spirit

  • Openness and honesty

  • Be accountable to attend regularly, be prepared for studies and pray for others
